This is also the time of year that I miss home the most. It's funny saying I miss home because here in the Deep South is home. But Yankeeland is also home.
And this time of year makes my heart hurt for a porch swing, a Yuengling and my dad puttering in the garage. I need to stand in a yard on the edge of a wood and smell how it's changing by the second, preparing for snow and sleep.
For brief seconds of time I feel suspended, like I can't draw enough breath to keep going without the promise of giggling on the couch with my mom, hugging my godbabies and hearing about their day and laying eyes on my grandparents. Without being wrapped in a blanket, inhaling woodsmoke and listening to a high school band while the football announcer strains to be heard above them.
I have a wonderful life here. I love my job. DH is the best man I have ever had the privilege of dating. I feel selfish for being homesick when my everyday is kind of freakin' extraordinary. But I'm still homesick, all the same.

I understand that need-missing the north and the family the way of life that only Northerners "get".
ReplyDeleteBe we live in the south now and it's our home now... but there's no place like home- our first home that is!
Mine is NY; I'm planning on Thanksgiving at my brothers up on Long Island, a few days there and everything will be ok, I'll get my fix.
Awn - I'm sorry you are homesick. I would be too... because - even though lots of people associate fall with the "dying" of trees and flowers... I associate it with pumpkin pie and hot chocolate.
ReplyDeleteGo get a "pine" candle and one sent for your car.
Make a pumpkin roll
turn the air to about 65
Drink hot chocolate
Put a slideshow one of fall leaves.
maybe a cure?
Love ya!
You had me at Yuengling!
ReplyDeleteFrom my ventures to the South, it is like a totally different country and I can only imagine how every so often things from your hometown pop into your mind, and you realize you're missing them.
Hugs and hopefully you can get your Pittsburgh on sooner then later.
Ladies,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the love! It helps knowing I'm not the only one who can feel this way. =) Looks like maybe home around Christmas with the lovely Dark Horse.
