I bought a paper planner for this year. I cannot be trusted with an iPhone calendar. They only work if you put stuff on them, FYI. I was supposed to be hanging out with a friend who has some littles. Turns out that the littles are sick or getting over being sick so I added BLOG to tonight's calendar. And if it is on the calendar it must be done.
There's big happenings here that I'll share at some point. But tonight is a little low key so I suppose I should actually write.
We started watching Season 3 of True Detective and thank all the stars above that this season is much more reminiscent of the first season and not the second. We're already hooked in and it gives us something to watch while we wait for April 14th to roll around....which is Game of Thrones season premiere for the final time.
There's clearly not much happening here so let me wrap this up. The point is just to write regularly and they won't all be winners...
BOOKS OF THE WEEK
I know I said that Obsidio was up next. I lied. I want to savor that book which means I will keep pushing it back.
In Progress on my Kindle:
Elysium Fire by Alastair Reynolds. I hold dystopian/post-apocalytic fiction in high regard. It has a special place in my heart. Maybe because I worry about the world becoming a worse place, I like to know that in the future there will be rebels fighting for better good of all. Anyway, whatever the reason I liked this book from the beginning. This is set on planets that were developed with a bigger overseeing government. I'm not too far in but I also like a scrappy female protagonist.
Up Next:
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy
Braving the Wilderness by Brene Brown

Hey look! I'm blogging!
I'm trying to stick to this once a week blogging that I have set for myself. I meant to write earlier this week and I just kept setting it aside. I did actually buy a paper planner for myself this year instead of relying on my phone. I got it in the mail yesterday and I'm really excited for getting things organized and planning my writing time.
I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices for a planner, and then I saw an ad on Instagram for one. Yes, advertising works, at least on me. So I checked out the company and the options they have and went with them. It's a company called ink+volt. I'm happy with my choice and it was enough that I'll actually use it and not so much that I feel really bad about spending the money.
Plus this will help with our budgeting when I need to remember to buy gifts or have holidays/vacations coming up that need money to be set aside.
I know, y'all can hardly contain yourselves with how exciting this post is!
As I was thinking about what to do differently this year I also think to help hold myself accountable in a fun way, I'm going to list all the books I have read or am reading the week of the post.
BOOKS OF THE WEEK
In Progress on my Kindle:
Smoke & Pickles by Edward Lee - this is interesting and a mix of memoir and cook book.
Bravetart: Iconic American Desserts by Stella Parks - I need this book for life to continue!
The Whole Town's Talking by Fannie Flagg - so far it's a very readable enjoyable read as most of her's are.
Up Next:
Obsidio by Amie Kaufman - This is the third book in a trilogy of graphic novels. I own the whole series in hardback because the graphics are amazing. These are not books I ever thought I would enjoy which goes to show you should definitely pick up books that are outside your comfort zone!
Happy Reading y'all! I've got to run. Link is obsessed with the laptop and is trying to figure out how he can use his claws to oust me from in front of the keyboard. Let a cat watch Youtube videos once and he turns into a despot. Sheesh.

Five Tidbits
It looks like I'm on the few times a year posting schedule. Sorry about that!
I really do enjoy writing and one of my resolutions for this year is to write more, whether that is blogging, in a journal or some ill-fated manuscript. But the actual act of starting to write after not doing it for so long is hard. It's a weak muscle that used to be exercised way more often.
In line with that, I thought I'd jot down 5 tidbits that you may not know about me.
1. I can make my own mayo. Now I know that doesn't seem like something worth sharing, but let me explain. E and I are in our second round of Whole30. We did our first in Sept 2017 and while it wasn't for weight loss but to feel better, we did lose weight and found that weirdly we didn't miss cheese and bread. And by "we" I mean me. I would have staked my entire bank account on the fact that life had little meaning without bread and cheese in it on a regular, i.e., daily basis. We did miss having a beer or glass of wine.
Fast forward to this round and I really wanted to try making mayo but all the recipes I had seen were very particular about how much oil and how to drizzle it and maybe sing it a song to be sure it was happy. If you failed at any one of these things then it would be a disaster and you wouldn't be allowed to call yourself a success in life. Nope, not for me. Way too much pressure in the kitchen which is my happy place.
Last week I saw a link for a no fail mayo and clicked on it so I could see all the ways others are better at this than me. Surprisingly it was an easy recipe and required no singing, so I thought what the hell. And, guys, it worked! I even chose to use a tall plastic container instead of a glass jar. I can hear all of you gasping from here. I know, I know, playing it fast and loose with the fail-proof recipe. My confidence has been renewed when it comes to concocting condiments!
In case anyone needs a confidence booster, here it is: https://thehealthyfoodie.com/fail-proof-home-made-paleo-mayo-whole30-compliant/
2. I've started to play Bunco with our neighborhood group. I had decided about halfway through the year in 2017 that I needed to make the remainder of the year a "YES" year. So when an invite was issued through the neighborhood facebook page, I said yes to attending. I was nervous about meeting other women in the neighborhood, and whether they would like me and was I dressed right and would I understand the game and what if they all hated me? My head can be a weird place.
Spoiler, no one hates me (that I know of) and everyone was so open and welcoming and I can, in fact, understand the game. It's loud and rowdy and reminds me of spending time with the women in my family. I'm hosting this month and I'm excited!
3. I'm the small time procrastinator of E and I's marriage. Papers or mail on the counter? Eh. Whatever. I'll get to it sometime in the next few months. The thermometer I ordered TWO MONTHS ago is still sitting on the kitchen table. It really should be elsewhere. It would take 2 seconds to pick it up and move it. Guess it's a good thing I"m hosting Bunco this month...it forces me to clean up the miscellaneous schmutz in our life. Or, red up, if you're some of my Pittsburgh folk reading this.
4. I still prefer an actual real book to my Kindle. I love the Kindle for travel and reading at lunch because it's small and fits in my purse. But there is something about feeling the pages of a book that the Kindle just can't make up for.
5. Sometimes when I'm in the kitchen and a recipe is particularly daunting I specifically choose to play the Game of Thrones Season 6 soundtrack. If I'm going to do battle then I should have the back-up music to complete the experience.
If anyone is reading this - because I think everyone has fled this blog since it's been forever since I posted - thanks for sticking around!

Mini Mind Dump
DH and I often ask the other one "What are you thinking about?" And usually the other person says "Nothing." I don't know about him, but I'm usually thinking about 9,267 unrelated items. So it's just easier to say "Nothing". When I consider blogging, I usually have a bunch of these unrelated items that I want to kind of dump on the page. But they rarely go together into one cohesive post. So tonight I pay respects to the tangled thought process that occupies my noggin.
Evie. Evie has developed a penchant for all items that are stringy or have strings or possibly could have strings if she drags them around the house enough. This means that she's fishing all manner of things out of the dirty laundry basket, off the makeshift drying racks and from the top of the dryer. Rarely does a day go by that I don't come home to find underwear, socks, tank tops, work out tops, bras or scrub pants somewhere in the house. Usually next to her food bowl. I'm not entirely sure whether she gets hungry from all the fetching and dragging or if she has given them all names and thinks our inanimate articles of clothing are hungry. It must be supremely confusing to her when they refuse to eat.
I bit the bullet and finally purchased some new foundation. I really hate the little expiration icons on make-up products. I don't use enough make-up to ever go through something completely before it "expires". And the time frame for some products is ridiculous. Mascara has a 3 month time limit. Um, not in my house. I have mascara, multiple mascaras actually, that are over a year old. And the majority of them are samples....I can't even go through samples in a year. There are not enough eyelashes in this house to use mascara in 3 months. Do people actually spend money on high end products and then throw them away when only a 1/4 has been used? Anyway, I digress...which is why I have so much junk in my mind. I went with Too Faced Born This Way foundation. The Porcelain shade is pretty much a perfect color match. But I have been so used to seeing a slightly too yellow shade in the Urban Decay Naked line that I feel washed out. See...the color wasn't even right in the Naked line but it was close and that crap is expensive so I was going to use it. Who cared if I looked a little jaundiced? Anyway, the Too Faced weathered a tough 9 rounds of 9Round tonight without smudging a bit. I'm not sure if I should be impressed or never expose my skin to it again. I'm just going to consider it a testament to the Wayne Goss method of foundation application. Thank heavens my primer is good for 36 months. It may be the only product I ever use completely.
I have a new author and blogger that I pretty much want to be. Except I'd rather she be her and I learn from her wisdom. By wisdom I mean actual wisdom and what it was to be cool in the 90's. I love when I randomly choose a book at the library/e-library and it speaks to me. Her name is Melanie Shankle and her blog is Big Mama. The first book I read was her newest one and it's about friendship. Y'all, yinz, you guys...it made me really think about my friendships that I've had and that I have. She has a way of writing that is both hysterical and thought-provoking. Anyway, I promptly bought all three books that she's written. I was laughing so hard while reading the one about marriage that DH asked if I was ok. It was gasping no sound tears down my cheeks with random bouts of sound laughter. The kind that sort of sounds like a farm animal dying, but is really laughter.
DH and I are officially at the top of the Popsicle Gang list....I know, we thought we were at the top also. I even wrote that blog post and everything. Well there was a snafu of sorts that's been sorted since and now we're at the tippity top (I couldn't keep the "s" theme going there)! This is simultaneously the most exciting news and the most petrifying news possible. This will all be over in the next few...four...six months. Ok, so we don't really have any idea when this will all happen. But it's closer to happening now than last week. And that means we'll either eventually be parents or we'll turn into Brandi Carlile roadies. Well, at least I will. I can't speak for DH.
I'd better end things while I can still move my arms. I lifted a total of around 1600 pounds over the course of my work out (in the form of a 12 lb med ball) - seriously, that 9Rounds is no joke. Which means I will be useless in about 10 minutes. At least I washed my hair tonight.

I Have An Idea
So I've been thinking about what to do with this here blog. I don't want to have a blog that is centered on one thing like baking or books or just my ramblings. It wouldn't work for me. So I'm going to go back to writing about what I know. Some days that will be books. Oh I love books! Some days that will be trying to have a baby and all the crazy emotional crap that accompanies that. Some days that will be about baking. What I've tried, what I want to try, why I love it so much. Some days it will simply be about my day or my cats or my DH of a husband (Dark Horse, FYI).
Have you guys seen the new Lego commercial? It's a hit as far as advertising goes. I was invested from second one and I didn't even notice the Lego's everywhere until the end shot. I'd love it just as much if it was a little boy instead of a little girl because it's about the feeling of creating something. Who cares whether you're male or female? Everyone has imagination.
Last weekend DH and I went out on a day date to one of our favorite watering holes. Then we walked down to a cigar bar. This picture makes me feel like a bad ass with a stogie and a scotch. What it doesn't tell you is that it's really hard to get the taste of cigar out of your mouth.
For the first time ever I made banana pudding from scratch. I didn't know that this stuff existed until 6 years ago since it's not a thing in the North. A fabulous friend bought me a Southern Living entertaining cookbook a few years ago for my birthday and I fell in love with the recipes immediately. But I have never used it until yesterday to actually make a recipe. Maybe I didn't feel southern enough. You know, I'm a Yankee. Don't tell anyone. We were having over my parents-in-law and when DH was asked either cobbler or banana pudding he chose the puddin'. What I loved about this recipe is that it used homemade vanilla pudding. One of my most cherished memories as a kid was helping mom make pudding. We usually had homemade and it was torture waiting for it to cook and then cool enough to not burn the crap out of our mouths. Once we were old enough we had the job of stirring the pudding while it cooked. It seemed to take an eternity to go from milk and sugar and cornstarch to blissful vanilla silky goodness. FYI, as an adult it still takes an eternity of around 15 minutes to go from "hmmm..." to "aw yiss". What I didn't know was that I was potentially inviting controversy and strife into our household. Yes, you read that right. The recipe called for a meringue top instead of whipped cream. Apparently this is a controversy in the south. Luckily for me my Texas family does not hold strong opinions on this and we all enjoyed dessert.
Henry has become very lovey and vocal as he's gotten older. Today he meowed for treats. This has never happened in 3 years. He sat on my lap yesterday and snuggled in for a nap. He's talking to us more. I'm convinced he's dying, y'all. DH had to tell me to calm down when Henry started all this because it was so unlike him. I forget life before him and thus I forget that he's only 3. I think he's stretching his personality and seeing what he likes. Do cats do that?
I think he's pretty much the most handsome man ever. Well, the most handsome cat man ever.
Happy Sunday Evening!
Tonight I declare ramblings!

Sunday Social: A Few Of My Favorite Things

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Hands down mint chocolate chip! But it has to be good chocolate - otherwise it's all weird and gets stuck in your teeth. Maybe it's the good quality ice cream that makes a difference? Hmmmm.
What is your favorite smell?
The way DH smells when he hugs me. Fresh cut grass. Vine ripened tomatoes.
What is your favorite TV commercial? (Past or Present)
There was a Krave commerical that made me laugh to the point of not breathing but I can't find a link for but the empty Krave cereal pieces jumped out with little headdresses and spears and chased down the chocolate. It reminded me of the pygmy mummies in The Mummy Returns.
What is your favorite day of the week?
Saturday would win out. By Friday night I'm worn out so we usually do dates on Saturday. Sundays are church and running and grocery shopping. Definitely Saturday.
What is your favorite way to waste time?
Reading and Reddit
What is your favorite article of clothing? (Feel free to show a picture)
My flat brown boots.

My Imaginary Friends
Share 5 Fictional Friends you'd want in real life. (Movie/Book/TV etc.) (inspired by Hooked and Happy)
1. Loralie Gilmore. C'mon, people, I want to hang in Star's Hollow. The wit. The smart humor. The fast talking. The cute clothes. The troubadour weddings. How can you not want to be friends with Loralie?
2. Claire DeTamble. She deals with a time traveling husband. Clearly she can teach me how to handle ANY stressful situation in life. Also, she doesn't mope over Henry being gone. She doesn't like it but she doesn't mope over it. I picture this happening: "Henry, can you pick up some milk?" "I did, but it's from 10 years ago. Sorry."
3. Natalie (The House Bunny). She had the idea for a BYOM party! Bring your own MOUSE. Seriously. That kind of inspiration can't be replicated.
4. Walter White. I'd be terrified of disappointing him, but it would be magnificent to see it up close and in person. Plus if I need these pesky student loans paid off, surely he can spare that kind of cash. He's Heisenberg, after all.
5. A younger Cristina Yang. You know, the Yang that was in the first couple seasons. On a side note, I've given up on Grey's in the last year. But Yang I shall always love, even the more melancholy Yang.
"It's small. It's tiny size. It has cat-type creatures on it. But it is a chair. For ninety-nine cents, you can buy furniture. That is America, man! "

5. A younger Cristina Yang. You know, the Yang that was in the first couple seasons. On a side note, I've given up on Grey's in the last year. But Yang I shall always love, even the more melancholy Yang.
